I've Got You

(Doc Hodges)

My father washed windows in his prosperous years

Built an average comp’ny in Alaska

I didn’t know him ‘til I’s five

Didn’t know he was alive

Or what kept the world between us

Mother’s second husband put my back against the wall

Blamed it all on drugs and booze

One night he’d done enough

Got a little too rough

Mama found me cryin’ black and blue

And she said, “Son get your brother

All your clothes and your bear

I’ve had enough, it’s time we got the hell out of here

We don’t have much to go on

I’m not sure what to do

But you hold on to me

I’ve got you”

I lost my first love when I was fourteen

Mother’s little sister was the same

I never knew that kind of pain

Why can't anyone explain

Why do they all say it’s just a shame

And she said, “Son bow your head

Kneel and say a prayer

I’ve had enough, it’s time we got the hell out of here

We don’t have much to go on

But the Lord knows what to do

You hold on to me

I’ve got you”

My boy just lost a tooth, baby sister just turned three

I know the proudest grandma in the world

Wife and I have struggled

I never knew this kind of trouble

Mama says, “Don’t worry she’s your girl”

She said, “Think about your children

And all the time you shared

And if you had enough, it’s time you got the hell out of there

I know it’s not much to go on

But I know you’ll make it through

Just hold on and remember

I’ve got you”

Mother’s just retired after twenty-seven years

Workin’ on the line and raisin’ kids

We built a lot of mem’ries

Shared a lot of vict’ries

And I’ll try to do just like she did

And I’ll tell my son and daughter

“There’s no reason to be scared

And if times get rough, I’ll get you both the hell out of here

I know it’s not much to go on

But I know what to do

You hold on to me

I’ve got you”
