Highway of Life

(Doc Hodges)
May 10, 2011

He’s forty years old and worked hard every day of his life

Bought a house and raised two kids; gave everything he had to his ex-wife

Thinkin’ that it’s time to do something for himself, he takes a drive

Another mile goin’ down, that highway of life

On the corner there’s a car lot, he’s passed going to work everyday

And he dreamed about a sports car, but most the time he just looked away

Seein’ his reflection in the chrome and fuel-injection, the dealer says, “the keys are right inside”

And he got in and revved the engine, the first time on that highway of life

The highway bends and turns, and the engine it still burns

The wind whippin’ by your ears until it hurts

Sometimes you go fast and slow, sometimes you don’t know where to go

Sometimes you got to put yourself first

And there’s a million miles, on that highway of life

He pulls up to a stoplight, next to a pretty girl with long blond hair

She’s prob’ly younger than his daughter, but she smiles as if to say “I don’t care”

He glances left and then looks right, waves good-bye enjoyin’ the ride

Another mile goin’ down, that highway of life

The highway bends and turns, and the engine it still burns

The wind whippin’ by your ears until it hurts

Sometimes you go fast and slow, sometimes you don’t know where to go

Sometimes you got to put yourself first

And there’s a million miles, but you’ve got to drive

And take your time enjoyin’ the ride, on that highway of life

Take your time, on that highway of life
