Autumn in July

(Doc Hodges)
May 10, 2011

Leaves are changin’ in the trees

The evenin’ sun is sinkin’ low

Warm weather doesn’t come so easy

And any day now it might snow

I can’t feel the chill in the breeze

Time just eases right on by

I never thought there’d be a time I’d see

The year that I had Autumn in July

I never thought much of her first husband

She never liked my fiancé

For sixteen years she’s all I ever wanted

So how could we be standin’ here today

The judge waves his hand and it’s all over

I don’t know if I could even cry

The rain would hide my tears anyhow

The year that I had Autumn in July

I wish that you could know how I feel

I guess we’ll have to wait ‘til winter comes

On a cold November, Pennsylvania mornin’

I’ll kiss you before we start to run

And in the end I see a passin’ smile

From someone I barely even know

She tells me everthing’ll be alright

“I promise you that I’ll outlast the cold”

I don’t know how to make it through

If you could just wait for me to try

I hung on by a thread to be with you

The year that I had Autumn in July

I wish that you could know how I feel

Maybe you can see it in my eyes

I lost a friend but found a true love then

The year that I had Autumn in July
